FURTHER INFORMATION

Admission to the PPGH-UFBA begins with the publication of annual regular calls for applications, available on this website and on the SIGAA platform.

The calls contain all necessary information, such as the number of available spots, application requirements, selection criteria, and important dates. Generally, each selection process offers 24 spots for the Master's program and 15 spots for the Doctoral program, equally distributed among the program's research lines, with 30% of spots reserved for self-declared Black candidates.

The PPGH has a specific format for foreign students residing outside the country, through annual international public calls. Since 2025, the program reserves up to 3 exclusive spots for international students in the Master's program and up to 3 spots for international students in the Doctoral program.

These spots are specifically designated for candidates who:
- Are not Brazilian citizens (even if holding dual nationality)
- Currently reside outside Brazil
- Hold an undergraduate degree in History or any other discipline within the Humanities, Arts, or Social Sciences
- For the Doctoral program: hold a Master's degree in the aforementioned areas

Students from the Global South are especially encouraged to participate in these international calls, which offer tuition-free graduate studies.

RESEARCH LINES
The PPGH is organized into three main research lines that candidates must choose before application:

1. Society, Power Relations and Region - Focuses on the field of politics and power relations, combining analysis of historical and historiographical phenomena in different territories and periods.
2. Slavery and the Invention of Freedom - Interested in African and Afro-Diasporic historical experiences, focusing on social identities related to race, gender, class, and ethnicity.
3. Culture and Society - Investigates culture through Cultural and Social History, understood as the shared fabric of ideas, memories, representations, and codes.

SELECTION PROCESS
Candidates must hold a recognized undergraduate degree and meet the specific requirements outlined in the call for applications. Applications are submitted online through the Integrated Academic Activities Management System (SIGAA) for national candidates or foreign students living in Brazil, where they must complete a form and upload required documents.

For international candidates living outside Brazil, applications are sent directly by email (poshisto@ufba.br) with documents in PDF format.

The selection process consists of several stages, including evaluation of the research proposal, analysis of academic writing samples (for Doctoral program), and online interviews for international candidates. It is essential that the research proposal aligns with the program's research lines and the faculty's expertise.

FUNDING
When available, the PPGH offers Master's and Doctoral scholarships from research funding policies by funding agencies (Capes, CNPq, and Fapesb).

Scholarships are awarded based on the quality of the research proposal and candidates' socioeconomic profile, and may be distributed at any time during the first year of the program.
