History

The Graduate Program in History (PPGH, acronym in Portuguese) at the Universidade Federal da Bahia – UFBA (Federal University of Bahia) was created in 1990, when it split from the Graduate Program in Social Sciences and structured the first Master’s Degree in History program of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Since then the PPGH–UFBA has been a reference for various areas of research, both nationally and internationally.

One of the most relevant research and teaching themes of the PPGH is the social history of slavery and post-emancipation, and its various intersections (such as the history of Africa, Atlantic history and the history of Brazil’s native peoples), developed in the "Slavery and the Invention of Freedom" research seminar. In addition, investigations on labor, religion and religiosity, political institutions, gender relations and literary practices, among other aspects of socio-cultural history are also developed by members of the "Culture and Society" research seminar, and have acquired notable prominence. On the other hand, researchers linked to the "Society, Power Relations and Region" seminar are dedicated to the field of political history, investigating themes such as the formation of the National State, political parties, social movements, dictatorships, and anti-communism.

Currently, members of the PPGH hold seven CNPq (Brazilian National Research Council) research fellowships.
